Listen carefully to Shelley tell the truth about she returned her DeLay money. She says she wants to talk about the issues, not about the DeLay money. Then she tries to change the topic. She says, "...I would be on firmer ground to just not have the money"
On why she was at top of DeLay's list for $ as reported the Charleston Gazette as $48,000.00:"The figure is an incorrect figure...the actual figure is $41,000...I'm glad to have an opportunity to clear that up...."
But the incredible part of the clip: "I think any leadership PAC....they're more interested in having control of their parties.."
Basically Shelley admits that she got the money because Tom DeLay wanted to influence her. If she admits that she knew this, WHY DID SHE TAKE THE MONEY?

If one takes a quick look at some of Shelley's FEC information, you'll find both that West Virginia for Life PAC and the Republican Majority for Choice PAC have both spent money on her behalf. Shelley likes to cultivate the image with her South Hills crowd that she's really is pro-choice. At the same time she tries to soothe her pro-life supporters. She doesn't *really* like to talk about it. Interestingly, Shelley's currently got a 44 % rating by the National Right to Life Committee.

People have been wondering about Shelley's use/abuse of the franking system in Congress and its curious correlation to campaign activities. (Franking is the ability of members of congress to send mailings to constituents using taxpayers' money).
Shelley is starting to get nervous. Her current mailing is only vaguely informational and very much targeted at the swing votes in the Eastern Panhandle. Federal law prohibits the use of franking privileges for campaign material, but for ethically-challenged Delay cronies, it is hardly surprising.
What I love about this mailing is that she is bragging about the money she was able to deliver to the Eastern Panhandle AND she's making the Taxpayers pay for it. This particular mailer is a glossy 8.5 x 11 unlike most we've seen.

For readers of our little blog, the good news is that that you can look forward to a lot more of Shelley's exploits in the months to come.
Ironically, Shelley recently said, "I send mailers from time to time. I try to stick to the informative..."

WASHINGTON - A former congressional aide and lobbyist described Tuesday how he obtained advice, insider information and help from Bush administration procurement chief David Safavian to advance two projects being promoted by Republican influence peddler Jack Abramoff.

The aide, Neil Volz, who was a partner of Abramoff's at the time, also outlined how they received assistance from several Republican congressmen including, Rep. Bob Ney (news, bio, voting record), R-Ohio, Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (news, bio, voting record), R-W.Va., Rep. Don Young (news, bio, voting record), R-Alaska, and Rep. Steven LaTourette (news, bio, voting record), R-Ohio.

Volz is the government's star witness in the trial of Safavian on charges of lying to investigators about his assistance to Abramoff while he was chief of staff to the administrator of the General Services Administration, the agency that oversees property owned by the federal government.

Safavian, who has denied any impropriety in his relations with ex-partner Abramoff, later became the federal government's top procurement official at the Office of Management and Budget before he was indicted.

Volz added flesh and blood details to a series of e-mails the government had introduced earlier showing contact between Abramoff's team and Safavian in the summer of 2002, before several of those involved, including Safavian and Ney, took an expensive weeklong golfing trip to Scotland that Abramoff organized.

Volz testified that the Abramoff team referred to Safavian as a "champion" because he could get inside information on policy developments that was not otherwise available to lobbyists.

He described how Safavian advised Abramoff and his partners to get information on the best way to secretly attach a rider to a bill nearing passage in Congress that would order the GSA to sell the so-called White Oak property in Silver Spring, Md., to a school that Abramoff had established.

Volz also described how Safavian gave advice on how to obtain the letters from key congressmen to the GSA to alter a proposal to redevelop the Old Post Office here in a way that would give one of Abramoff's clients, the Chitimancha Indian tribe, an advantage over other bidders. Abramoff and the tribe wanted to develop the property as a luxury hotel, which would be near restaurants that Abramoff owned on Pennsylvania Ave.

Describing help they requested from Capito's office on the White Oak project, Volz said they wanted to keep her role secret.

"She was up for re-election and this potentially could have put her in harm's way on the campaign trail ... because this project doesn't have anything to do with her district," Volz explained.

Ney is under criminal investigation in the Abramoff probe. Ralph Reed, who is seeking the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor in Georgia, did some work for the lobbyist.

Last week, Campaign for America's Future sent a letter -- along with a postage-paid envelope addressed to the Bush-Clinton Katrina Relief Fund -- requesting that all members of Congress who accepted money from Tom DeLay donate their contribution to Katrina survivors. Already, four members of Congress -- Reps. Kenny Hulshof (R-MO), Steve LaTourette (R-OH), Heather Wilson (R-NM), and Jeb Bradley (R-NH) -- have either given DeLay's money back or to a Katrina relief fund.

Capito has announced she won't challenge Senator Byrd. The question is why? The suggestion is that her deep links to DeLay and the money she accepted from him heavily influenced her decision. Capito had until January to make her decision, so it is no coincidence that she is dropping out now that DeLay has been indicted. She may have some real explaining to do back home about her ties to DeLay and his money machine and may have a real challenge just to keep her seat.

Convicted felon Arch Moore is apparently urging his daughter to run for the Senate. The question is why? Again and again, Moore tries to recreate his public image through his daughter without admitting that he is a crook of the first degree. He not only does not apologize for being publicly corrupt and taking bribes, he now claims it never happened.

Almost as odd is that Capito does not distance herself from Moore. If Capito runs for the Senate, or runs again for the House, she needs to answer a few questions about her father: Does she believe that he took bribes? How does she explain her father's wealth? What has her father admitted to her? How much of a role does her father have in advising her? This man is not just her father--he is one of the defining politicians of the second half of the 20th Century in West Virginia----and his corruption had a devastating effect on the image of West Virginia.

Mrs. Capito, why can't you keep your personal life personal and your public life public. Please don't keep secrets from the public about the role of the felon in your public life.

Abuse of Power? Capito to seek pardon for her disgraced father?

Is Congresswoman Capito trying to get a pardon for her father, a convicted felon?
Capito needs to tell the public whether she has spoken to anyone in the Bush administration about a pardon for her father.
Capito needs to tell the public whether she has used any of her congressional staffers to work on any issue related to pardoning her father.
Capito needs to pledge that she will not seek a pardon for her father nor use her office and staffers to seek that pardon.
As recently as this July 4th, Capito and her father met with George Bush in West Virginia. The fact that the President met with the convicted felon is a strong indication that this pardon is on the table.

Background:

Arch Moore, the disgraced former governer of West Virginia, pleaded guilty in 1990 to a five-count federal indictment charging him with mail fraud, filing false tax returns, extortion and obstruction of justice. He then served thirty-three months in federal prison.

The State of West Virginia also instituted a civil action against the disgraced governor which was then settled in 1996 for $750,000.00.

Back in 1970, Arch Moore was the target of a criminal tax investigation by the Internal Revenue Service. His lawyer brought the criminal tax matter to a successful conclusion with only “civil exposure” . In the mid-1970s, the Moore was indicted by the federal government on a single Hobbs Act allegation (extortion under color of official right). He asserted his innocence, went to trial, and was found not guilty by a jury. During this trial it was revealed the he had $180,000.00 in cash.

Capito brings terrorism risk into WV with nuclear waste vote.

Capito has put West Virginia at a greater terrorism risk by allowing nuclear waste to be imported into West Virginia over critical rail lines and bridges. She voted to ship nuclear waste into West Virginia. Her actions will have nuclear waste shipped by rail over the Potomac river into the Eastern Panhandle. The nuclear waste will also be shipped into the Kanawha Valley.

Just this May, she voted against funding to secure the nation from terrorist threats that would have allowed for better protection for rail systems.

Call her and tell her to use her influence with President Bush to make sure that the nuclear waste isn't shipped into West Virginia.
